T O P I C R E V I E WApollo-SoyuzSpace Cover of the Week, Week 179 (Sept. 16, 2012)Space Cover #179: Pioneer Venus ProgramAs a followup to my posting in week 94, the space cover of this week commemorates the launches of the two Pioneer-Venus spacecraft — an orbiter and multiprobe spacecraft. The orbiter was launched on May 20, 1978 aboard Atlas-Centaur #50 and the multiprobe was launched on August 8, 1978 aboard Atlas-Centaur #51. Both spacecraft were designed to conduct a comprehensive investigation of Venus and its atmosphere. Mission operations were conducted from Ames Research Center. Both of the covers were serviced by the Ames Research Center stamp club and autographed by Pioneer Project Manager, Charles F. Hall. John MaccoSpace Unit #1457Bob MIn addition to the handsome cachets that John has displayed above, the Ames Research Center Stamp Club also provided at least three more well-done cachets for the Pioneer-Venus mission.Shown here is a red oval cachet applied to the back of one of my P-V launch covers and also cachets for the December 4th Orbiter orbit insertion and for the multi-probes and bus entering the Venus atmosphere on December 9th.Apollo-SoyuzThe last two covers in Bob's post above were also serviced by the Ames Research Center Stamp Club.rvk quote:Originally posted by Bob M:...the Ames Research Center Stamp Club also provided One minor correction. The oval cachet in "red ink" was released by the NASA ARC Public Affairs Office, not the ARC Stamp Club. It was designed by the graphic arts department at NASA ARC and was made available to anyone at ARC to use on their envelopes. The other cachets shown are from the NASA ARC Stamp Club and the artwork was designed by me, Richard Kapp.
